Time is Money. Unless You’re an Insurance Company

    December 02, 2015 —
Benjamin Franklin may never have been President but he’s better known than most of them. Not least of all for his pithy quotes on a wide range of subjects:
  • On personal finance – “A penny saved is a penny earned.”
  • On education – “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn.”
  • On getting real – “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
  • On guests – “Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.”
  • On lawyers – “A countryman between two lawyers is like a fish between two cats.”
  • On beer – “In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria.”
  • But if you were to pick one theme that seems to recur the most in Franklin’s quotes, it would be productivity:
  • “Time is money.”
  • “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
  • “Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today.”
  • “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man happy, wealthy and wise.”
  • But, as the next case, Grebow v. Mercury Insurance Company, Case No. B261172, California Court of Appeals for the Second District (October 21, 2015), illustrates, sometimes the most efficient way of doing things may not necessarily be the most financially prudent way of doing things. The One New Year’s Resolution You’ll Want to Keep if You’re Involved in Public Works Projects

    January 07, 2015 —
New Year’s resolutions are hard to keep. In fact, studies (which I have a sneaking suspicion may have been paid for by the tobacco, donut and vacation timeshare lobbies) have found that only 8% of New Year’s resolutions are kept. But, here’s one you’ll want to make sure you keep. Mandatory Registration and Notice Requirements If you’re a public works contractor or subcontractor you only have until March 1, 2015 to register through the California Department of Industrial Relations (“DIR”) to bid and enter into public works contracts on state and local public works projects. And if you’re a state or local public agency you must provide notice of the DIR’s new registration requirements in all call for bids and contract documents beginning January 1, 2015. Bank of America’s Countrywide Ordered to Pay $1.3 Billion

    July 30, 2014 —
Bank of America Corp.’s Countrywide unit was ordered to pay $1.3 billion in penalties for defective mortgage loans it sold to Fannie Mae (FNMA) and Freddie Mac in the run-up to the 2008 financial crisis, a little more than half of what the U.S. had requested. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan issued the civil penalty against the Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank today in the first mortgage-fraud case brought by the federal government to go to trial. Countrywide and Rebecca Mairone, a former executive with the mortgage lender, were found liable in October for selling thousands of bad loans to the two government-sponsored enterprises. Mairone was ordered today to pay $1 million. Read the court decision

‘Revamp the Camps’ Cabins Displayed at the CA State Fair

    July 30, 2014 —
This year, the California State Fair is displaying “four modern, environmentally friendly cabins” as “part of the ‘revamp the camps’ mission by the Forward Parks Commission, California State Parks and 12 architecture graduate students at Cal Poly Pomona,” according to the Sacramento Bee. The commission’s purpose is “to find solutions for the financial, cultural and population changes affecting state parks” including “drawing millennials and urban residents who live far from traditional state parks.” Guidelines stated that the cabins “had to be portable, accessible to the physically disabled and made from sustainable materials.” Furthermore the cabins had to be under $15,000 each, have no running water or electricity, and “[y]et the design had to appeal to a younger market.” “After a review of the surveys and recommendations from the Parks Forward Commission, the hope is to place the prototypes in state parks for public use,” the Sacramento Bee reported. Five Facts About Housing That Will Make People In New York City and San Francisco Depressed

    February 26, 2015 —
If you live in New York or San Francisco, you should spend some time mining the latest crop of home price data -- starting with the Standard & Poor’s Case-Shiller indices. Then, pull out your last rent check. It might be enough to make you move. Here are a few things to get you thinking: 1. What you pay for parking in New York can buy a cheap home in Chicago The cheapest tier of homes in the Windy City were valued at less than $170,368 in November, the Case-Shiller tiered-price indices show (there are three tiers: low, middle and high). That compares to the $136,052 average price tag for parking space in New York last year, according to Jonathan J. Miller, the president of the appraisal firm Miller Samuel and a Bloomberg View contributor.
