Balfour Taps Qinetiq’s Quinn as new CEO to Revamp Builder

Balfour Beatty Plc (BBY) named Leo Quinn as new chief executive officer to revamp Britain’s biggest builder which has suffered from mismanaged projects and a lack of demand. Quinn will start on Jan. 1 after five years as CEO of defense specialist Qinetiq Group Plc, Balfour Beatty said today. The executive began his career at Balfour Beatty in 1979 as a civil engineer and later worked as president of Honeywell Building Controls and CEO of banknote printer De La Rue Plc. The stock gained 5.3 percent in London trading today. Balfour Beatty, which rejected a merger proposal from British rival Carillion Plc in August, has struggled since the global recession slashed orders and prices. Its stock had fallen 48 percent this year before today, reducing the company’s value to 1 billion pounds ($1.6 billion). In September, Balfour Beatty cut its U.K. construction-services unit’s profit forecast and said Chairman Steve Marshall plans to leave. I.M. Pei, Architect Who Designed Louvre Pyramid, Dies at 102

I.M. Pei, a dominant figure in American architecture for more than three decades who designed the Louvre’s crystal pyramid and the angular East Building of Washington’s National Gallery of Art, has died. He was 102. His son Li Chung Pei said on Thursday that his father had died overnight, the New York Times reported. Pei gave “this century some of its most beautiful interior spaces and exterior forms,” said the jury of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which Pei won in 1983. Though reserved and supremely diplomatic, Pei’s face, always crowned by round thick-rimmed glasses, could break unexpectedly into a wide, dazzling smile. He approached clients with charm and a quick wit, and they usually succumbed happily. Read the court decision

Maria Latest Threat to Puerto Rico After $1 Billion Irma Hit

Hurricane Maria was on course to hit Puerto Rico just two weeks after Irma caused as much as $1 billion in damages on the bankrupt island. Maria’s top winds were at 155 miles (250 kilometers) an hour, the National Hurricane Center said in a notice around 6 a.m. New York time. Consider Short-Term Lease Workouts For Commercial Tenants

The COVID-19 pandemic is adversely affecting commercial real estate as it continues to wreak havoc in industries throughout the economy. For many years, the primary declining CRE sector has been brick and mortar retail stores. However, the retail sector is no longer suffering alone, as the COVID-19 outbreak is hurting most other CRE sectors: office, hospitality, multifamily, restaurant, personal services, entertainment and construction. Federal, state and local governments have ordered business shutdowns and social and travel restrictions limiting most social and commercial activities. As a result, commercial tenants throughout the country are going out of business, temporarily closing, curtailing operations, laying off employees and suffering sharply declining revenues. Short-Term Leasing Workouts of Tenant Defaults Thousands of tenants are partially operating or temporarily closed and lack sufficient cash flow or access to additional working capital to pay some or all of their rent. How should a landlord address a distressed tenant's default and request for rent relief, taking into account the landlord's own responsibilities to pay maintenance costs, real estate taxes and debt service on the property? Less Than Perfectly Drafted Endorsement Bars Flood Coverage

The court decided that the policy's flood exclusion, despite being poorly located within the policy, barred coverage for loss caused by flood. Great Lakes Int'l Trading Inc. v. Travelers Prop. Cas. Co., 2014 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 165378 (D. Conn. Nov. 26, 2014). Hurricane Sandy caused flood waters from the Hackensack River in New Jersey to inundate a warehouse where the insured had imported food products stored for sale in the United States. High winds also sheared open parts of the warehouse's roof, allowing extensive rainwater to enter the building. Read the court decision

Wall Street’s zest for a corner of suburban real estate long left to small landlords is reaching new heights, attracting institutional investors, homebuilders and apartment managers during a pandemic that has ignited demand for larger homes. The pension manager for the Canadian Mounties is the latest investor in single-family rentals, joining JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s asset-management arm and Nuveen Real Estate in a bet that there are lots of Americans who want spare bedrooms and backyards, but don’t have cash for down payments. “It’s really an inflection point in SFR,” said Michael Carey, a senior director for Altus Group, an advisory firm. “It used to be an alternative asset class.
