Ornate Las Vegas Palace Rented by Michael Jackson for Sale

A unique and ornate palace for sale in Las Vegas was home to Michael Jackson in the strange and isolated years before his death. In fact, the King of Pop was the last tenant in the 24,000-square-foot estate, and his portrait still hangs above the fireplace. Jackson eschewed the main house and lived in the guest villa while he was rehearsing for his Las Vegas show, The One, from 2007-2009, according to listing agent Eddy Martinez of Miami Beach-based Worldwide Properties. To avoid the paparazzi, Jackson traveled through a tunnel under the main house and got directly into a car parked at the end of it, Martinez said. The Hacienda Palomino has only had two owners since theater developer Horst Schmidt built it in 1952. The home at 2710 Palomino Ln is "enchanting," said Martinez, and the property's unique features — including a musical note insignia used as an architectural feature — intrigued the late superstar. Fixing That Mistake

Someone once said, more people could learn from their mistakes if they weren’t so busy denying that they made them in the first place. In the construction industry, mistakes are not uncommon. Addressing them, however, can be complicated. What should a contractor do when the project owner says some aspect of the project is not satisfactorily completed or isn’t performing as it should? Should the contractor wait, hoping it may get resolved without having to do anything? Or should the contractor take on the repair or replacement as soon as practically possible? Doing nothing may be easy but can expose the contractor to significant subsequent liability. Dealing with the issue, on the other hand, could result in the destruction of what might later be required evidence in any litigation which develops. Considered “spoliation,” such manipulation or elimination of evidence is a consequence to be avoided. Even though done with the best of intentions to fix a problem, the process can wind up exposing one to liability and damages. Fix for Settling Millennium Tower May Start This Fall

With the lengthy and complex permitting and approval process complete and almost all the other details worked out, construction could begin in mid-November on the estimated $100-million shoring fix for the 645-ft-tall Millennium Tower in San Francisco. The perimeter pile upgrade for the 58-story residential condominium building, which has settled more than 17 in. toward the northwest since its completion in 2009, was originally expected to begin earlier this year. New York Condominium Association Files Construction Defect Suit

According to The Real Deal, “The condominium association at 15 Union Square West has filed a $5 million lawsuit against developer Brack Capital Real Estate eight years after the building first launched sales, alleging that the firm did not deliver the quality of units it promised when residents originally signed their contracts.” Alleged problems include roof leaks, lack of terrace landscaping, and patchy electrical work, The Real Deal reported. A spokesperson for Brack stated, “We stand behind our product and are very proud of it.” Read the court decision

Floors Collapse at Russian University in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Russia (AP) -- Part of the roof and several floors of university building in Russia's second-largest city collapsed Saturday, but officials say there were no casualties. The Emergencies Ministry said the collapse at the Saint Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics took place as construction work was underway. Justin Bieber’s Unpaid Construction Bill Stalls House Sale

The Toronto Sun reported that Justin Bieber’s Calabasas, California house sale to Khloe Kardashian has been stalled due to a an unpaid construction bill. Bieber sold the home for $7.2 million, but allegedly owes $85,000 to a construction company for home repairs. Bieber moved out of his mansion in Calabasas “to Atlanta, Georgia after numerous encounters with the police regarding alleged loud parties, speeding in the gated community and 'egging' a [neighbor’s] house,” according to the Toronto Sun. Bieber has a week to pay the lien, or the house sale does not go through. Read the court decision

Two-Part Series on Condominium Construction Defect Issues

Gregory L. Shelton, construction law attorney at Horack, Talley, Pharr & Lowndes, P.A., wrote a two-part series in the Charlotte Observer about condominium construction defect issues. The first part described “common defects and their consequences,” while the second part explained “how legal time limits can prevent the association or its owners from suing the parties responsible for defective construction.” If interested in purchasing a condo unit, Shelton recommended hiring a building inspector, though he cautioned that “the inspector should be truly independent. His client should be you and not ‘the sale.’” In the second part, Shelton discussed the complexities of statutes of limitations and statutes of repose. Read the full story, Part 1...
